The turning leaves remind us that the time of Halloween approaches when the veil between the worlds is the thinnest. We thought that you all might be amused by some spooky tales and poems to help you get into the proper mood. Enjoy!

And now for something completely different. I recently attended the premiere of a new documentary called SEEDS OF ALOHA, about the 100th Battalion, the first all Japanese American unit that fought on the battlefields of Italy and France in WWII. Some of the snippets of conversations I overheard afterwards was that a person didn’t know that their grandfather or great grandfather was involved, they never talked about it, and they wished they had asked them. Most of the WWII veterans are gone and they have taken their stories with them. That is sad.

Most of us carry amazing video recording devices wherever we go. Get your elder’s permission, set up your phone, hit record, ask your question, and then let them talk. Take notes about things about which you are curious, or for which you want more clarity. Let them finish before asking your next question. The hardest thing to do is to keep quiet and let the elder speak. Sessions don’t have to be long, and it is usually better to let them know ahead of time what you are curious about to allow the elder to collect their thoughts. Once you have the recordings, back them up in multiple places. Future generations will appreciate you taking the time today.
